Ian Brown, Southampton Guildhall
FOR me there are two artists of the last 20 years who face a happy headache. Oasis come up against it every time they tour and no doubt Ian Brown experiences it whenever he arranges a gig: which, out of the library of classics I have created, shall I play?
It's a nice problem to have and on Monday night at the Guildhall, Mr Brown showed it's a problem that's not going to get any easier. Far from it in fact, especially with new tracks like Sister Rose, On Track and The World Is Yours getting aired, fresh from his latest album.
These latest efforts are unmistakably classic Brown.
Naturally, classics like I Wanna Be Adored, My Star and Golden Gaze provided some of the highlights, although it was a full-length version of I Am The Resurrection and F.E.A.R. that pressed all the right buttons.
They're not just songs, they're anthems, the soundtrack to our lives, testament to a successful career for a singer who can't strictly speaking sing. That's why we love him and that's why there wasn't a smile missing from anyone's face. Mr Brown, you are adored.
