BSO, Lighthouse, Poole
YAN Pascal Tortelier stamped his authority on Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances in a performance of immense bravura.
The composer left a big bone for any orchestra to chew on and the BSO's musicians were eager to show they are up there with the best.
Sonorous qualities were just part of the plan; the inclusion of saxophone, superbly player by Kyle Horch, needs very careful writing to fit the orchestral soundscape as here.
Acerbic brass introduces the central waltz. In the formidable finale Tortelier guided the BSO to a conclusion of blistering brilliance.
Bruch's Violin Concerto No 1 seemed almost too polite in this context but Valeriy Sokolov presented a virtuoso reading of finesse. The central Adagio sung its glorious melodies with ripe affection culminating in the finale's rhythmic drive delivered with verve by Sokolov and accompanied by tutti precision.
Stravinsky's short 1919 Firebird Suite drew accomplished playing in the Round Dance. The fantastic Infernal Dance shattered the peace with Tortelier taking balletic leaps as though his pants were on fire. The Berceuse feathered down exquisitely.
