WITH his tentative solo debut behind him, Wild Wood captured a newly confident Paul Weller in arguably the most potent songwriting, singing and playing form of his solo career. The singles - Hung Up, Sunflower and, of course, the title track - are among his best, while album tracks like Holy Man and Foot of the Mountain became live staples for years.
A second disc of extras includes a blistering unreleased track in the deep, dark prog-funk flavours of Greetings, as well as the gospel-tinged Oh Happy Day. There's a superb studio version of Neil Young's Ohio and a slightly ragged take on Small Faces' I'm Only Dreaming. Demos include a dirty R&B slant on Pictures On The Wall and Changes, an early version of As Is Now LP track Blink And You'll Miss It.
