IF YOU saw Unklejam pave the way for Sly Stone's shambolic attempt at performance at the Opera House a couple of months ago, you'll be champing at the bit to get your mitts on this rollicking debut. Summoning the spirits of Funkadelic, prime Sly, Isaac Hayes, Parliament and Prince, this funk-laden sonic shock and awe campaign wipes the floor with mere mortal pop.
What Am I Fighting For? scored them a top 20 hit this year and is in fine company alongside Love Ya, with its androgynous, helium-high vocals, but Unklejam are not all about camp sparkle. Jacko would kill for the lachrymose Luving U; and if Cry stirs a distant echo of Seal, it's only in a good way. What fun it would be if Unklejam landed a Scissor Sisters-sized audience, with the cred factor of OutKast.
