Super Furry Animals, Guildhall, Southampton

CHOMPING celery on stage, dressing up as a Power Ranger and having a conversation about dogs between songs? Just another gig from the Super Furry Animals, of course. Add all this tomfoolery to an ear-bleeding set of psychedelic rock and pop and there is no denying that when these Welsh lads are around there's never a dull moment.

We were treated a set sprinkled classics and new tunes, like Neo Consumer and Show Your Hand, off their latest album Hey Venus.

However, as with all bands with a hearty back catalogue like these, it was the old ones that really got the crowd going. The band had barely said a word to the audience after the first few songs, but the silence was broken Gruff Rhys saying: "This is a song about our favourite breed of dog." We all knew Golden Retreiver was on its way and it wasn't long before the band launched into it.

Rings Around the World and Northern Lites were obvious crowd pleasers, while an extended version of The Man Don't Give a &%% helped end one of the tightest gigs at the Guildhall this year.
