A PURBECK pet centre that was under fire for keeping its animals in squalid conditions has been commended for its "significant improvements".

A string of complaints had been received against the Three Oaks Animal Kabin, part of Lytchett Minster's Courtyard Centre, in the first half of this year.

RSPCA inspectors were concerned over the stocking density of animals, cleanli-ness and water quality.

But after working with the RSPCA and Purbeck council, the Animal Kabin is now said to be making good progress in cleaning up its act.

Inspectors say they have seen improvements in a number of areas in the last four months, including a reduction in the stocking density.

They reported no new complaints and said the owners of the shop had co-operated fully with them.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: "It remains an ongoing issue and we will continue to offer advice and assistance."

Nick Parr, environmental health officer at Purbeck District Council, said: "We are currently visiting the Three Oaks Animal Kabin on a regular basis. So far we have been pleased with the progress that has been made in improving the conditions there."

Purbeck council holds the ultimate power of revoking a centre's licence if they believe animals are at risk.

Danny Brown, owner of the Three Oaks Animal Kabin, only took over the centre in December and said they had installed new pens for the animals.

He said: "The place has definitely improved.

"It would be nice to get things done quicker than they are, but we can only do so much with the money coming through the door."
