A DORSET police chief is urging trick or treaters to show respect this Halloween and respect people's privacy.
Supt Martin Hiles of the Dorset police operations division said: "Halloween is a time of the year when people like to dress up and have fun.
"But for some people; especially the elderly and those living alone, it can be quite distressing.
"We are appealing to members of the public who are planning to dress up and visit homes trick or treating to be aware that some members of the community are genuinely scared of the costumes, loud noise and games."
He added: "Our message is simple - please have an enjoyable evening but respect other people's wishes.
"If they do not want to open their doors or join in then move on and do not try and intimidate them in any way."
Supt Hiles said parents and guardians should ensure they know where their children are at all times, what they are doing and that they are safe.
"To help us ensure the public feels protected and safe we would ask that all tricking or treating be supervised and that homes are not visited after 9pm.
"Please keep an eye out for homes displaying no trick or treaters' posters and respect those people's choice not to take part."
