NEW boy James Henry grabbed a memorable debut double as Cherries climbed off the foot of League One with a deserved 2-0 victory at Bristol Rovers.

The 18-year-old Reading prospect, signed on a month's loan by Cherries, netted with a close-range header to give the visitors the lead three minutes before the interval.

And Henry sealed Cherries' third away league win of the season when he bagged a fine individual effort deep into stoppage time.

His finely-taken brace ensured Kevin Bond's charges gave their 407 travelling fans much to cheer at the Memorial Stadium.

Neil Moss raced off his line to clear at the feet of Sean Rigg in the early stages before the Cherries goalkeeper turned Stuart Campbell's snapshot around the post.

Henry then went close to drawing first blood for Cherries when his fiercely-struck drive was saved by Rovers goalkeeper Steve Phillips - with his knees - after 21 minutes.

And the teenager again tried his luck from distance after seizing on a stray pass from Ryan Green, only to see his thunderous effort just clear the crossbar.

Henry finally made the breakthrough on the stroke of half-time when he headed home from close range after Jo Kuffour and Darren Anderton had created the opening.

Lewis Haldane should have at least tested Moss after riding three challenges on route to the edge of the 18-yard box - but skied his resultant shot over the Bass Terrace.

Haldane went close to equalising at the start of the second half, his powerful right-foot shot flashing past the upright and striking the stanchion behind Moss's goal.

Chances were scarce during the early stages of the second half, with two further efforts from Haldane failing to seriously trouble Moss.

But the Cherries stopper was called upon to make a crucial save after 68 minutes, spreading himself at the feet of Rickie Lambert after the striker had gone through one-on-one with Moss.

Anderton's speculative shot from 25 yards flew narrowly past the post before Rovers substitute Sammy Igoe forced Moss to help his delicate lob over the crossbar.

Cherries sealed the points when Henry netted his second deep into stoppage time, the youngster finishing with aplomb from just inside the 18-yard box.
