DEVELOPERS wanting to demolish two chalet bungalows in Burton, replacing them with six new properties will find out if they have the official go-ahead at a planning meeting on Thursday.
The scheme drawn up by Quantum Homes is to clear two existing houses at 68 and 69 Whitehayes Road in and build two four-bedroomed and four three-bedroomed properties - all with parking - in their place on the large corner site backing on to properties in Footners Lane.
Despite objections from Burton parish council and neighbouring residents, borough planning officers are recommending the plans for approval by councillors at Thursday night's meeting of the planning control committee.
Parish council concerns centre around the development setting an unwanted precedent for the street, leading to overcrowding and poor access for existing residents but town hall officers believe the high quality' designs will greatly enhance the character and appearance of the area.' Some residents objected over the lack of privacy, increased noise levels and potential harm the development may mean to the existing wildlife, should the properties get the green light.
Nine letters of opposition were sent detailing these concerns but the planning committee also received 18 letters of support praising the thoughtful design' and welcoming plans to build only six properties on the site.
Despite the possibility of homes in Stony Lane and Footners Lane being affected by the building work, planning officers do not believe the work will result in any loss of privacy to the neighbouring houses or remove any of the rural characteristics of the street.
According to council planning officers, previous applications to develop the site, leaving in place the existing properties, were refused because they resulted in the surrounding properties being too cramped and intrusive. But because the two houses, currently sitting on plots of land substantially larger than any other in the street, will be demolished, the six new houses will not infringe upon other nearby homes.
