"I'M Sikh," declares the Indian student. "Oh dear," replies his tutor. "I hope it's not contagious." Other students enlisting for the English class include a Pakistani who's "hopping to be unrolled in your silly bus".
Then there's the humourless German and priapic Italian, along with the sexy French girl, the deferential, camera-toting Japanese businessman and the Greek shipping clerk who's "walking with sheeps".
In short, this '70s sitcom packs in more racial stereotypes than you can shake a stick at. Back in 1978 funny foreigners were fair game for comedy scriptwriters. But while there's nothing malicious in Powell's multi-racial mickey-taking, it just doesn't seem that funny any more.
