Today we launch the eleventh annual Daily Echo Christmas Toy Appeal.

For the last decade we have called on our readers to buy an extra gift for needy children and desperate parents.

You have not let us down.

This year, our main concern is how to beat last year's total.

Nearly 8,000 gifts were handed in at collection points from Poole to Christchurch.

Appeal organiser Phil Carey said that last year's mammoth effort eclipsed his expectations.

He added that he is hopeful this year's appeal will be even more successful.

Radio station 2CR FM is supporting us after helping in previous years.

But the backbone of the Toy Appeal has always been the readers of the Daily Echo.

This year we're asking readers to dig a little deeper to bring the spirit of Christmas to even more hard-pressed families.

There are no presents left from last year and our charity partners report a greater need than ever.

Toys for young children, presents for teenagers, and gifts for desperate mums facing Christmas in a women's refuge, are high on the Daily Echo's wish list.

Health and safety laws mean we can only accept new presents.

We will be joined in our collection by businesses across the district. Other seasonal events will be used as an opportunity to give a gift. Further details will follow as the collection gathers momentum.

The Christmas tree at out Richmond Hill headquarters goes up on Friday November 23.

From that moment on, the office will be ready to accept gifts to pass to local charities.

With your help, we can make this another happy Christmas for all of our community.
