PLANS have been revealed for Barclays new multi-million -pound headquarters in Poole.
Asda is proposing to build two new office blocks next to its Holes Bay store, which will have uninterrupted views across the water.
Barclays intends to move into the larger building on the north east corner of the site, with around 850 employees and the second will be leased or sold.
"We are always looking for innovative ways to develop surplus land in our estate," said Jonathan Refoy, head of property communications for Asda.
"This is an exciting opportunity to bring a development of regional significance to Poole in a gateway location."
The larger of the two splayed wings would have 10,770 sq m of office space over four floors with 194 parking bays and the smaller would be 5,711 sq m over five floors with 48 parking spaces.
"In May Barclays announced a preliminary agreement to develop and lease a new 100,000 sq ft office building at a site in West Quay Road," said a Barclays spokeswoman.
"The preliminary agreement is subject to receiving planning permission from the local authority and this process has now begun.
"Construction is scheduled to begin in 2008 and Barclays intends to move into the new building when it opens in 2010."
The development, which has been submitted to the planning authority, was welcomed by Jim Bright, Borough of Poole policy director.
"A blue chip company on a gateway location leading in to our town centre with good quality jobs is really good news and it really supports the regeneration we are trying to achieve in the town," he said.
When Barclays announced last year that it was shedding 1,000 jobs and down-sizing its Poole operation, there was much speculation about its massive Barclays House building which dominates the George Roundabout.
Moves were made to have listed the unique nine-storey three octagonal towers, built in the 1970s at an estimated cost of £5m, but in the last few weeks, the government has decided to turn down the application.
"The council is aware that a feasibility study to explore how that building could be re-used or a new building could be put there is currently being undertaken by Barclays," said Mr Bright.
