MEMBERS of the community have come forward to help the elderly during the uncertain times the COVID-19 outbreak has created.
People have offered to pick up shopping for elderly and vulnerable neighbours, as well as calling them to check up on them while they are on lockdown.
Former councillor Elaine Atkinson said: “They (the elderly and vulnerable) need to be told more clearly.
“The intentions are good, but there is still more to do. It has to come from the government and be available.”
Here is a list of support available for the elderly and vulnerable:
• People can call the Age UK Advice line on 0800 169 65 65
• Dorset Council has confirmed it is setting up a helpline to those in the ‘shielded’ category
• Dorset Council also has a dedicated webpage with advice surrounding the coronavirus we can be found at www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/coronavirus
• BCP Council has joined forces with local community groups to form a ‘together we can’ response, more information can be found https://www.bcpcouncil.gov.uk/News/News-Features/COVID19/Community-Response/Community-Response.aspx
• Covid-19 Community Support Group – Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole is a group that has been set up on Facebook. Flyers were sent out to members so they could say whether they wanted help or not
If you can offer or have been offering support for the elderly and vulnerable through this crisis we would love to hear from you.
