A PUB in Winton could have its alcohol licence revoked over concerns about a “lack of control” over customers, despite it having had more than half a dozen changes in managements in the last three years.
Supported by BCP Council licensing officers, Dorset Police has requested councillors review the licence for The Talbot in Wimborne Road.
It said the pub, owned by Ei Group, had been “mismanaged” with a series of violent incidents and “significant disorder”, dating back to June 2018 outlined in its referral.
The review will be heard at the meeting of a BCP Council licensing sub-committee on Tuesday, the first it will have held since powers to meet virtually were introduced earlier this month.
Among the issues raised by police licensing officer in her eight-and-a-half page report are assaults including those in which glass bottles were used as weapons and non-compliance with rules banning glasses from being taken outside.
Concerns are also outlined about the lack of improvements even though the pub has had eight different registered licence holders in the last three years.
A series of meetings have been held between its managers and police and council licence officers in a bid to address specific issues.
“Unfortunately, despite these efforts, the premises continues to be of concern,” Ms Busfield’s review request says.. “Due to the nature of the incidents that are taking place, the apparent lack of control by all those who have assumed responsibility during the past 20 months and the lack of a sustainable solution, Dorset Police consider that it is appropriate to apply for a review.”
She has urged councillors to give “particular consideration” to revoking the licence and said there were “very few” other options which would address concerns.
The position of the police has been supported by council senior licensing officer Sarah Rogers who said Ei Group “should have been taking more proactive steps” to deal with issues.
“In my 20 years as a licensing officer I cannot recall a single premises that I have invested so much time into with such minimal improvement,” she said.
A spokesperson for Ei Group said: “We have been working closely with the local police and licensing authority to ensure that the pub continues to be a safe and secure community hub for customers now and in the future.”
A final decision on whether to revoke the licence will be made on Tuesday.
