NOW that Simon LeBon's voice sounds weedier and reedier than ever, even when he's reaching for an impersonation of himself 25 years ago, you can't help wondering why Duran Duran persist in embarrassing themselves further. Recorded with Justin Timberlake (he even sings on Falling Down), Timbaland and Nate Hills producing, Red Carpet Massacre (could they be any more self-referential?) lurches from blando stadium pop-rock to bad '80s retreads, via excruciating musical nods to hip hop, techno and funk.
There may be dyed-in-the-wool fans who will trip over themselves to pick this out of the shops, but it's hard to see how the limpid squall of Nite-Runner, the sterile pomp of the title track or the unintentionally hilarious Box Full o' Honey will win many converts.
