LIKE Rachel Dryden of Fairmile Grange Rest Home (Daily Echo, April 18) I find it unbelievable and unfair that care home staff are expected to endure a 250 mile round trip to the nearest Covid-19 testing point – always supposing that they can drive, have a car, are feeling unwell, can afford the petrol and the time off work as well as possible costs for child or other family care. They also face the possibility of being stopped and questioned by the police (quite rightly) re the reason for their journey.
Many care staff are worried that new residents are not always tested before being accepted and are not being cared for in isolation when it sometimes seems they should be – according to government guidelines.
This is putting the staff, their families and residents at risk and undermining the wonderful work the carers are doing and want to continue doing in as safe an environment as is possible.
