A KEEN young scientist and his mum have taken to making science, fitness and coronavirus information videos during lockdown to entertain and engage friends and family of all ages.
Joseph Skinner, aged four, and his mum Nikki from Lytchett Matravers have dedicated the past few weeks to creating fun yet informative videos about a variety of topics.
Joseph has always had a strong interest in science and a love of science experiment videos, but inspiration for his and Nikki's videos arose from Joseph’s concerns for his friends who have been struggling with the lockdown.
Nikki explained: "On the second week of lockdown, our neighbour's little boy started to find the lockdown difficult. He snuck out twice to ask Joseph if he wanted to play.
"Joseph came up with the idea of making videos to cheer his friends up. We planned how to explain the virus to three and four-year-olds."
The coronavirus information video features tips on washing your hands and explaining the importance of white blood cells, demonstrated with jigsaw pieces.
After Nikki shared the informative video on Facebook, it received over 800 views in the space of a day, with appreciation expressed by families in Australia, America and Holland.
Now, with over 1000 views, Nikki has received messages from families all over the world praising the video.
Nikki said: "By making these videos, we hope that we might help just one person. We had a lot of fun making the coronavirus video and Joseph is really proud of it."
For Nikki, the videos (especially the coronavirus information video) are important not only for their content, but for the joy it brings those who watch the videos and for the Skinner family themselves.
Nikki explained: "I'm enjoying lockdown as I get to spend more time with my kids. Before I know it, they'll be embarrassed teenagers. It's so important that Joseph is having fun and he's having a positive experience from the lockdown, despite missing his pre-school friends and teachers.
"I have always wanted to be a teacher too, so by making these videos in lockdown I have had the opportunity to fulfil that with my children."
