A POLICE officer was forced to jump into a moving car after a motorist refused to get out when stopped and tried to drive off because "I'm in self-isolation."

An officer from the Dorset Police No Excuse team stopped a red Mercedes in St Aldhelms Road in Poole yesterday afternoon after it had been witnessed travelling at 42mph in a 30mph limit in Lindsay Road.

The registered keeper of the vehicle is disqualified and officers wanted to check who was driving.

A No Excuse spokesman said: "The officer then approached the vehicle and calmly spoke to the driver through the open passenger window.

"The driver however refused to comply with the officer. He refused to confirm who he was or get out of the vehicle.

"All he kept saying was 'I'm not not stopping here as it's not safe, I'm not getting out of the car as I'm self isolation, I wasn't speeding because I had the limiter on'."

Police said the driver then started the vehicle, kept the doors locked and tried to close the passenger window.

The officer opened the door through the window and jumped in before being carried 25 metres down the road.

"This driver's moment of madness resulted in the single crewed officer having to enter the vehicle and force the vehicle to stop using reasonable force" said the spokesman.

"The officer's quick actions prevented any risk of any further issues and avoided a pursuit. Members of the public offered their assistance and a couple of people called 999. We Thank those for their help.

"To date we are unsure why the driver did what he did but his actions have escalated a speeding offence into a court hearing.

"It also turns out he was legally driving and on the way to the shop for his son, who is the one disqualified. It's therefore even more confusing why this road traffic stop escalated so quickly."

The officer was not hurt during the incident.
