Most of us can probably name at least two funny place names in Dorset off the top of our head.
But the county has plenty of others, of which we've been delighted to compile into this list for a bit of light relief to end 2022.
1. Shitterton
Near Bere regis, Shitterton is the name probably most commonly known.
It's probably thanks to stories about residents having to fork out for a new stone entrance sign because people kept stealing the normal road sign.
In 2012, the idyllic hamlet was named as Britain’s most unfortunate place name.
It beat Scratchy Bottom near Durdle Door in Dorset and Brokenwind in Aberdeenshire in the survey .
Back in Victorian times the prudish had its name changed to Sitterton but, over the years, it reverted back to the original name, that derives from a farm on a stream used as a sewer.
2. Scratchy Bottom
In Lulworth, Dorset. Go west along the coast path past Durdle Door and you will soon find it. Scratchy Bottom featured in the 1967 film of Far From the Madding Crowd.
Equally, there is a place called Happy Bottom in Dorset. In fact, it is a nature reserve between Corfe Mullen and Wimborne.
3. Shaggs
Shaggs is in East Lulworth. And rumoured to be where Prince Harry once rented a secret love nest with girlfriend Chelsy Davy.
4. All things Piddle
River Piddle, Dorset – also Piddlehinton, Piddletrenthide for those who love a piddle.
5. Droop
Moving on from Piddle's, Droop is a hamlet near Blandford Forum in Dorset.

6. Shatters Hill
This is the road that lies off Wareham’s North Street.
7. Crumpet's Drive
This lovely sounding place is in Lytchett Matravers. And we think it sounds delicious.
8. Knackers Hole
Knackers Hole is a hamlet in North Dorset.
9. Goathorn Close
We would love everyone who lived in this lovely sounding street to actually own a goat.
10. Pug’s Hole
The smallest of Bournemouth’s nature reserves, just off Meyrick Park golf course.
11. Dungy Head
Purbeck can certainly lay claim to a lot of these funny place names. Dungy Head is near West Lulworth.
