A MAN died after being “ejected” from his Vauxhall Astra when it mounted a verge and became airborne, an inquest heard.

Gareth Carter died after suffering head injuries during a traffic collision on the Fawley bypass near Calshot.

The 40-year-old had been travelling at speed along the B3053 when he lost control of the car and crossed the opposing lane, according to documents from the area coroner, Rosamund Rhodes-Kemp.

Both Mr Carter and his male passenger were thrown from the vehicle.

He died at the scene on April 26, while his companion sustained serious injuries, Winchester Coroner’s Court was told.

After hitting the verge, his Astra is reported to have landed on its roof.

Ms Rhodes-Kemp recorded a conclusion of death due to a road traffic collision with the medical cause of death a head injury.Mr Carter, of Wimborne, Dorset worked as a construction engineer.

In a tribute previously issued by his family, they said: “Gareth was a much-loved son, brother and friend to anyone in need - his kindness knew no limits, neither his passion for helping others.

“After emigrating from South Africa in 2008, he excelled in the UK Armed Forces as a Royal Engineer, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He will be sorely missed by his immediate family in the UK, extended family in South Africa, Australia and Namibia - as well as the countless people around the world whose lives he touched. Gareth lived life to the fullest and he dreamed bigger than anyone. He will always be remembered for his kind, loving nature and free spirit.”
