THE former chief executive and town clerk of Christchurch Borough Council said he was “stunned” and “speechless” when told about being made a Freeman.
Michael Turvey, who served in the two roles for 15 years before retiring in 2010, received the honour at a town council meeting last week.
Mr Turvey has remained heavily involved in Christchurch in recent years.
He received praise from all around the world after news of his Freeman status spread.
Speaking to council members on Monday, January 18, Mr Turvey said: “I was stunned, and speechless, when I received the phone call to say that my name had been put forward to be the first Honorary Freeman of Christchurch Town Council.
“This is an incredible honour, which is appreciated and valued.
“As someone who has worked and lived in the town for over 25 years it’s been a great pleasure to work with so many people, who give their time to help others.”
He has been involved with The Grange School, Twynham Learning, Christchurch Rotary and Dorset County Council.
Last May he was elected chair of Christchurch Housing Society to continue the work of the late Colin Bungey.
Mr Turvey added: “It’s been a privilege to support the work and contributions made by so many people – including you as councillors and the groups you support.
“I never cease to be amazed by the number of people and organisations in Christchurch who give up their time to help others.”
