HUNDREDS of hospital workers and residents paid tribute and applauded the funeral cortege of a Poole Hospital employee who died with coronavirus.
Krzysztof Gogolewski, who worked at Poole Hospital's maternity unit, died on February 16.
With a restricted number of people were able to attend his funeral at Poole Crematorium on Monday March 8, Krzysztof’s family arranged for his funeral cortege to stop outside Poole Hospital en route.
Many people lined Longfleet Road as a guard of honour, and a heartfelt applause broke out as the procession made its way from the junction of Fernside Road and the B3068 in the direction of the hospital.
One resident said: “It is so sad, it sounded like he was a really nice guy and a loving husband and father.
“However, its great to see so many NHS staff out here showing their appreciation. He was clearly a well-loved guy.”
Members of Krzysztof’s family could be seen joining in the applause and thanking hospital staff and members of the public for their attendance and gratitude.
The 63-year-old became ill several weeks before his death and had not received a Covid-19 vaccination.
Krzysztof’s daughter Marta had said that father tested positive for Covid-19, followed by her mother and grandmother, who all live at the same address in Baiter Park in Poole.
Following his death, touching tributes were paid by his family as well as his colleagues.
Chief executive of University Hospitals Dorset Debbie Fleming said: “Krzsyztof was a much-loved and valued member of the Poole Hospital family who left a positive and lasting impression on all who met him.
“The incredible number of staff, and indeed members of the public, who gathered outside the hospital today to remember him and pay their respects are a fitting tribute.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with Krzysztof’s family and friends at this time.”
