A DECISION on whether a new Greek restaurant in Poole Quay can have an alcohol licence will be made by councillors today.
Jag Bar & Restaurant Ltd has applied for permission to run a “small bar” alongside its food operation ahead of its opening in the coming weeks.
But an objection over the “excessive” 10am-11pm request will mean a final decision will have to be made by councillors on Thursday.
Named Anemos, the Greek restaurant will operate from the unit at 15 The Quay and will also run a bar and bakery.
In a Facebook post earlier this month, its owners said they were hoping to open by the end of April with renovation work having already been completed.
The licence application was submitted last month and seeks permission for alcohol to be sold from 10am through to 11pm.
The restaurant’s opening hours will be 8am until 11.30pm.
It said the business would be “food-led” and that the availability of alcohol would “enhance customers’ dining experience”.
“The nature of the alcohol that we intend to sell is that they will not appeal to individuals looking to buy cheap alcohol in large quantities,” it said.
However, because of the single letter objecting to the licence, a decision on whether to grant it will have to be made by a BCP Council licensing sub-committee which is due to meet on Thursday.
“I feel that the hours requested from 10am to 11pm each day are excessive,” the anonymised letter, published ahead of the meeting, says. “This property is situated in a residential block and the longer the premises can sell alcohol the more likely it is for disturbance and noise.”
It adds: “Obviously they will want to do a lunchtime service, but do they really need to serve alcohol at 10am in the morning?”
A final decision will be made by councillors on Thursday.
