A BOURNEMOUTH primary school has received high praise from inspectors after separating from a neighbouring secondary and opening as a stand-alone school.

Avonwood Primary in Harewood Avenue was required to "de-couple" from Avonbourne Girls' Academy after it emerged that both boys and girls from the primary school would automatically be offered secondary places at the girls' academy.

In order to resolve the situation the schools have separated but they remain located on the same site - along with Avonbourne Boys' Academy - and all are operated by multi-academy chain United Learning.

Inspectors checked to ensure the school is likely to meet all the relevant standards when a full inspection is carried out.

The school has 570 pupils between the ages of two and 11 and was judged likely to meet all standards.

Inspectors checked plans in place for the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils as well as their welfare and health and safety.

They also looked into the suitability of staff, premises and accommodation, the provision of information and the quality of leadership and management.

Welcoming the report, head teacher Chris Jackson said: "We are greatly encouraged by the feedback from Ofsted who were impressed with many aspects of our school, particularly the way we have dealt with the challenges presented by Covid.

"The report is testament to our team of dynamic and inspirational staff who constantly seek to raise standards and enhance the learning experiences on offer here.

"We are fortunate to enjoy the support of our parents and Local Governing Body who are actively involved in the life of our school. By working together, I have every confidence that Avonwood will continue to go from strength to strength."
