MORE than 150 objections have flooded in against plans to build more than 50 homes on the side of one of Christchurch's busiest roads.
Residents and ward councillors have voiced their concerns about the proposals for the site at the corner of Barrack Road and The Grove.
As reported, Fortitudo Ltd is seeking outline planning permission for 51 apartments and four dwelling houses.
The application, which has been submitted to BCP Council planners, has sparked a large response from the community.
Scores of residents have submitted their opposition and their objections have been backed by the two Christchurch Independent councillors who represent Commons ward, Margaret Phipps and newly-elected Vanessa Ricketts, have pledged their support to the scores of residents objecting to the plans.
“There is a great deal of concern in the area about the size, scale and suitability of these proposals and the highway implications," said Cllr Ricketts.
“We are talking with residents to ensure all their objections are heard and will vigorously oppose the plans.
"The scale of this proposal on the site is quite astonishing.”
Objectors have highlighted the traffic problems already experienced in the area, along with the approved redevelopment at the former police station and magistrates' court site in the town centre.
One resident of The Grove described the building as "ridiculous" and a "complete eye sore", while another said GP surgeries and schools in the area are already oversubscribed.

There have been more than 20 comments submitted to the council backing the scheme. None of these come from Christchurch residents, with submissions from address in Fulham, Bromley and Whixley in North Yorkshire.
The supporters highlight that the proposal would make "good use of available land", the need for more housing in the town and meet the needs of first-time buyers.
One comment in favour of the scheme says the development would make a "striking entry point" to Christchurch.
Poole-based Fortitudo's plans would deliver 35 one-bed and 16 two-bed apartments over four floors alongside four two-bed dwelling houses.
A statement submitted on behalf of the developer by Chapman Lily Planning Ltd said the proposal would provide "modern, fit-for-purpose accommodation, meeting an identified need".
Residents have until June 5 to submit their views to BCP Council's planning department.
