THE A37 will close for five nights for roadworks - with a 31-mile diversion route in place.

The route, which serves as a link between Dorset and Somerset, will be shut in both directions starting at 8pm and reopening at 7am the following morning, starting on Monday, June 7 and will be finished by Saturday, June 12.

The stretch of the road, measuring nearly nine miles, will be closed between Stockwood and Grimstone to allow workers to repaint line markings on the A-road.

A spokeswoman for Dorset Council said: "Contractors WJ Roadmarkings South West are refreshing worn out line marking between Stockwood Junction and A356 Junction.

"Road closure required for the safety of the workforce working in the carriageway."

During the road closure, a 31.1 mile diversion route will be signposted and will take motorists across Dorset and into Somerset.

Dorset Council say the reason for the length of the diversion is because the closure is on an A-road and therefore any official alternative route must use the same class of road.

Alternatively, there are a number of shorter but unofficial routes that drivers can take to avoid the road closure. These are not suitable for HGVs and should be avoided if using larger machinery.
