All of the new supermarkets coming to Dorset

Discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl have announced plans to open five new stores across Dorset in the next year. 

The introduction of these new stores across the region will act as a welcome buoyancy aid to the jobs market, providing more than 100 jobs for residents.

Both stores are continuing their ambitious expansion efforts across Dorset this year, with Aldi announcing they are looking for 13 locations across the county. 

Famous for their special-buys and middle isle deals, the supermarket chains hope to open more than 100 stores nationwide this year.

Two new Aldi's in Poole

The German supermarket is looking to invest more than £7million in new stores across Dorset. 

They are currently looking for new sites in 14 different locations across the county including Bridport, Christchurch and Weymouth. 

There are currently two new stores opening soon in Poole, one of which is on Fleets Lane and will open on June 17 at 8am.

Christchurch Lidl

Work is currently underway for a second Lidl in Christchurch which is now just a matter of months away from opening. 

Work began on the unit at Christchurch Retail Park in August last year in the site of the former Homebase off Barrack Road. 

Providing an update on the new store, Lidl said fit out works have now begun.

The remaining work is due to be carried out by construction firm Wright Morgan.

This phase of the project is expected to take three months and the company is hoping to have the store open in late summer.

Shaftesbury Lidl

Construction recently began on this new Lidl in Shaftesbury ahead of its opening later this year. 

Lidl was granted permission by Dorset Council to build a new supermarket on Christy's Lane, Shaftesbury in a multi-million investment into the town.

The new store will open its doors this winter and create 40 full and part time jobs in the area.

Verwood Lidl

A new Lidl in Verwood was granted planning permission by Dorset Council in September last year.  

The approved application sought planning permission to demolish existing housing and build a Lidl food store in Ringwood Road.

In planning documents the German chain said its store would “increase both the vitality and viability” of the town centre.

A spokesperson for Lidl said:

"We can confirm that construction of our new Lidl store in Verwood is underway and is expected to open later this Autumn.

"Once opened, the store will create around 40 full and part time jobs for the local area and we look forward to delivering our fresh, quality and affordable produce to the local community."

New Milton Aldi

Although not in Dorset, there is also a new Aldi opening in New Milton on the eastern border of the county. 

The 1,862sqm store will open on Caird Avenue and is expected to create up to 50 full and part-time jobs.

Aldi's previous application was refused by just one vote last May. Councillors were told a former Co-op store at Station Road - New Milton's high street - was a better site for the new supermarket but Aldi said it lacked suitable parking.

However, Aldi supporters said Caird Avenue was an excellent site for the store. They added that extra competition could cut the cost of a weekly shop.
