CULTURE vultures are expected to flock to Britain in 2008. Tourism chiefs are hoping that visitors attracted to the UK because Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture this year will also spend time perusing some of the other cultural delights that the country has to offer.

Tourism organisation VisitBritain said almost two thirds of all visitors to the country are very likely to visit galleries or museums during their stay.

Almost half attend live concerts and over a third go to the theatre, the opera or the ballet.

To encourage cultural tourism VisitBritain has launched a Culture 08 campaign to highlight the UK's cultural offerings.

Campaign manager Kate Ellwood said: "This is our opportunity to shine the spotlight on the wealth of exciting events that are taking place throughout England in 2008.

"We want to encourage our visitors to create their own cultural calendar of events, exhibitions, shows and scenes to get out and about enjoying short breaks in their own country."

Locally, tourism bosses were keen to point out that Dorset has much to offer culturally.

Cabinet portfolio holder for the local economy in Poole Cllr Ron Parker said: "Poole is renowned for its world-class beaches, beautiful open spaces and watersports. However, the town also has a lot to offer in terms of cultural attractions.

"Poole has an extremely vibrant arts scene with many examples of public art around the town and an exciting arts development programme that takes place throughout the year.

"It is also home to Lighthouse, which is the largest arts centre outside London, with a 669-seat theatre and 1,500-seat concert hall. There is also the newly refurbished Poole Museum.

"Poole's most historic and well-known landmark is the Guildhall, which dates back to the 18th century and has recently been restored to its former glory as part of a major renovation project funded by Borough of Poole."
