THE Council closed Pier Approach due too high volumes of traffic.
Thousands of people flocked to the conurbation over the weekend to make the most of the hot weather at the beach.
Roads in Sandbanks were also closed over the weekend when car parks became full.
And the council confirmed the Pier Approach flyover was closed to traffic, but reopened a short while later.
A spokesperson said: “Due to sheer volume of traffic, Pier Approach flyover in Bournemouth is currently closed to vehicles. It is still passable for buses and emergency vehicles.
“Our roads around Bournemouth Town Centre are incredibly busy. Please avoid this area if possible.”
The road reopened shortly before 4pm.
Earlier this year, the council’s multi-million-pound summer readiness plan was announced.
It included round-the-clock beach patrols, tow-away zones, a park-and-ride site and 75 more seafront staff.
Dorset Police increased its patrols, ensuring officers were more visible and actively speaking to people in the area.
