AN ELATED new mum from Wareham made it third time lucky by welcoming Dorset's first twins of 2008.

After two unsuccessful attempts at IVF treatment Elaine Legg, 27, gave birth to Dillon and Maisie at Poole Hospital on January 2.

It came as something of a shock to Elaine and mum Sandra Dempsey, who was present at the birth, as the twins were not due until February.

Elaine had also been having contractions for several weeks and had been in hospital most of that time, though doctors were not expecting her to give birth so soon either.

"It was a mixture of shock and relief when it finally started happening," said proud new grandmother Sandra, 49.

"Suddenly the doctor said they had to get Elaine downstairs because things were happening quite quickly.

"Elaine has fallen madly in love with the twins, though, and is absolutely elated.

"When I look at them, I just can't believe it."

Despite mother and twins all needing an extended stay at Poole Hospital because of the circumstances of the birth, all are said to be doing very well.

It proved to be a fantastic start to the new year all round for Sandra's family, as youngest daughter Rebecca had passed her driving test earlier in the day, also at the third attempt.

"We couldn't have asked for a better start to 2008," said Sandra.

In rushing to the hospital for the birth of her grandchildren, though, Sandra had to give up her tickets to see the Spice Girls.

"I got what I really, really wanted though!" she laughed.
