POLICE have launched an investigation into claims of animal cruelty caused by a group of teenagers in Poole.
Officers were notified of an incident at the beginning of the month, in which a “small group of teenage boys” were seen firing a catapult at a magpie.
Poole Police are appealing to parents and guardians of children in possession of catapults to ensure they are using the devices for “legitimate purposes”.
A spokesman from Poole Police said: “Following a concerning report of animal cruelty in the area of Trinidad Village, officers have increased patrols and will be continuing to monitor the area.
“At the beginning of August, a member of the public witnessed a small group of teenage boys firing a catapult at a magpie and then subject it to animal cruelty.
“This was a particularly cruel and cowardly act and there is no excuse for this behaviour. An investigation is ongoing to deal with these criminal offences.
“Once again, I would like to make an appeal to the parents of children, who know they have catapults, to ensure they are only used for legitimate purposes.
“It is concerning that children of this age are displaying acts violence towards animals.
“If anybody has any further information regarding this incident, please contact Dorset Police via 101 quoting reference number 55210127818.”
