DORSET and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) is reminding people across the county to ensure their chimneys are clean in a bid to prevent fire damage to properties.
As part of national chimney safety week, running from August 30 until September 5, DWFRS is urging those who have a smokestack to maintain them correctly.
Vikki Thomas, DWFRS safe and well manager, said: “A clean chimney can help prevent fires and structural damage to your property.

“Getting a qualified chimney sweep to inspect your chimney regularly, and using a quality assured fuel, are the keys to prevention.
“As well as removing soot and tar deposits, and clearing obstructions such as bird or animal nests, leaves and debris, the sweep will also check for any problems with the chimney or liner.”

Last year DWFRS attended 170 chimney fires across its region issuing various safety advice for anyone with a working smokestack.
Including do not use flammable liquids like petrol to light a fire, as well as not overloading with fuel.

Do not use excessive amounts of paper or rubbish and always get the chimney swept before the colder weather sets in.
Also to make sure any smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working and tested regularly.
