MORE than 20 firefighters were called to the Shorefields holiday park between New Milton and Milford-on-Sea on Thursday (Jan10) evening when a chemical spillage led to a release of chlorine gas in the swimming pool plant room.
One member of staff was taken to hospital but discharged after treatment for breathing problems caused by inhaling the fumes released when too much chlorine was inadvertently added to other cleaning chemicals shortly before 6 pm.
Two fire crews from New Milton attended and were joined by one appliance from Lymington, a special equipment vehicle from Southampton and an incident command unit.
But it took just two fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus and chemical protection suits to deal with the choking fumes in a 90-minute operation to ventilate the plant room with the aid of a large fan.
