ALL things being equal, Amy Winehouse would be grubbing around for bar gigs and Sam Brown would be a superstar and a healthy role model to boot.
But they're not and Ms Brown is best known as Jools Holland's lead female voice with a few hits of her own (Stop, With a Little Love). Fine, but natural justice demands more.
Of the Moment, Brown's first solo album in seven years, perfectly captures her enigma.
Operating outside of the pop mainstream, she's struggled to define her own style.
Should she sing the hell out of the blues, and please the folks?
Or go for broke with something more challenging? Thus, the promising You'd Think I'd Know By Now and Void are offset by the smoky default setting of Show Your Love and Do Right By Her.
