Robin Cousins won gold in figure skating at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, United States. It was the only gold won by Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the tournament.
The British Olympic Association voted to defy the government by sending athletes to the Olympic Games in Moscow, USSR, that summer.
The Football League Division title was won by Liverpool for the 12th time while West Ham United won the FA Cup. Their 1-0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley Stadium ensued they took home the silverware for the third time. West Ham were in the Second Division at the time and are the last team from outside the top division to win the cup.
Nottingham Forest retain the European Cup with a 1–0 victory over West German league champions Hamburger SV in Madrid. The winning goal was slotted home by Scotland international John Robertson. It was the fourth year the European Cup had been won by an English club , as Liverpool won it for two consecutive years before Forest's first victory the previous year.
