A SANTA Claus decoration that was stolen from a pub two years ago has mysteriously returned - with an apology note blaming booze for its disappearance.

The 12ins tall Father Christmas figure was taken from the London Tavern in Poulner, Ringwood, Hants, during Advent in 2019.

Landlord Phil Hoyle, 47, put out an appeal at the time begging for the thieves to show some 'Christmas spirit' and return it but to no avail.

His plea seems to have finally been heard 24 months later as the Santa was left on a bench outside the venue.

The figure was accompanied by a note from the guilt-ridden culprits saying 'we had drunk too much'.

It read: "To the landlord, sorry we stole the Father Christmas two years ago, we had too much to drink.

"Here he is back, thanks."

Mr Hoyle said he was thrilled by the figure's return and he forgave the thieves, adding that they would be welcome back to the pub provided they 'left the decorations alone'.

He said: "We are delighted he's been returned and thank those who walked off with him for bringing him back.

"He appears in good shape despite his ordeal and is still clutching the pair of skis he had with him.

"The decorations are up, the log fire is on and our Santa is back above the bar where he belongs.

"Those who took him are forgiven and they are welcome back as long as they drink as much as they did on the night of the crime – and leave all our decorations alone."
