DRIVERS are facing extra delays in the Fairmile area of Christchurch this week when urgent roadworks are carried out to repair a section of crumbling carriageway.
Traffic diversions caused by the continuing major road works in Barrack Road is already leading to congestion in the Fairmile Road - Bargates corridor, especially at peak times.
And temporary traffic lights operating in Fairmile Road near the Flambard Avenue junction between 9am and 4pm are expected to cause further congestion.
Work was due to start on Tuesday and depending on weather conditions should be completed by Friday.
Bob Baker, transport and highways manager at Christchurch council, said: "This work needs to be carried out now as the road surface is breaking up and would become dangerous if left.
"The road surface in this small part of Fairmile Road will be replaced to keep it safe.
"We apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause."
