A SPATE of minor accidents outside primary schools last week has added impetus to the Daily Echo's campaign to prevent dangerous parking.

A woman was taken to hospital after being hit by a car outside St Michael's Primary School in Bournemouth on Thursday morning.

And in two separate incidents outside Kingsleigh Primary School in Bournemouth last week, a child and a mother were hit by cars, a situation described by the head teacher as a "nightmare".

Head teacher of St Michael's in Somerville Road, Bob Kennedy, said: "The mother was hit while she was putting her child in to a car seat. People were double parking and another car thought they could squeeze through but hit her car door."

The woman was taken to Royal Bournemouth Hospital with an injured leg and suffering from shock, but she was not seriously injured and was released that day.

Acting head teacher of Kingsleigh Primary School in Hadow Road Vivienne Miller said she was aware that a little girl and a woman had been bumped by cars outside the school last week but neither of them was injured.

She said: "It is frightening. The situation has got worse since we moved to the new site two weeks ago. It is just a nightmare."

The Daily Echo visited Kingsleigh on Monday and saw more than a dozen parents parked on the zigzag outside the school, a few parked on double yellow lines, some on the pavement and others did not park at all but let their children out in the middle of the road.

Janet Farmer, who has two children at Kingsleigh Primary, said: "It is not safe for our children and lots of parents are concerned about it. People should be aware of the danger or someone will get hurt."

Samantha McKenzie, who has three children at the school, said: "The other day one of my children was nearly hit by a car and I got abuse from the driver."

Mrs Miller said: "I have discussed the problem with the Parent Teacher Association and the governors.

"Two governors have taken responsibility for this.

"Our site manager has taken down number plates and when I find out who is parking dangerously I will talk to them about it."

She said she wanted to close the road to traffic making it safer for pedestrians, the crossing patrol to move nearer to the school gates and said the problems might be alleviated when the school opens the gates in Bennion Road.
