A BOMB disposal team was called after an “old ordnance” was discovered on a beach near an abandoned Dorset ‘ghost’ village.
A heavy police presence was reported in Tyneham – the former civil parish which has been left abandoned since 1943.
Dorset Police received a report at 11.43am on Sunday, January 30, that an old ordnance had been found on the beach at Pondfield Cove in Tyneham.
Officers attended the scene, as did the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team who was notified and safely removed the device at around 5.50pm.
The ordnance in question was not live.
During the Second World War, the village was cleared of its inhabitants to provide a training ground for soldiers prior to the D-Day landings. The villagers never returned.
The once thriving community village has since become a popular tourist attraction.
