A SMALL road in Bournemouth cost motorists more than £60,000 in parking fines last year, the Daily Echo can reveal.

Coach House Place, linking Lansdowne Road with the train station, was the most costly to drivers looking to avoid paying for parking - with BCP Council receiving £60,328 in penalty notices.

In total the local authority received nearly £2million (£1,855,144.68) in parking fines between January 1, 2021 and January 1, 2022.

There were 27 roads or car parks across the conurbation that bought in more than £10,000 in the same time period with 56 roads amassing more than £5,000 in fines each and 209 roads raising more than £1,000 in fines.

The figures, obtained by the Daily Echo through an Freedom of Information Act request, relate to penalty charge notices for parking across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole across 1,437 locations. They do not include tow or clamping figures.

Saxon Square Car Park in Christchurch was the most lucrative of the council’s car parks, with £21,961 received in penalty charges.

Old Christchurch Road in Bournemouth was one of the worst affected areas in the conurbation with fines totalling £21,766 for illegal parking.

In the top 10 locations with the highest payments, five were in Christchurch, three in Bournemouth and one in Poole.

Last summer saw records broken as thousands of people flocked to our beaches and thousands of parking tickets were issued across the region - with most of these occurring at seafront locations.

The worst affected seafront locations, or the locations that amassed the highest amount in fines were Avon Run Road at Avon Beach (£20,479), this was followed by Sandbanks Car Park (£19,403) and Highcliffe Top Car Park (£18,717).

The roads that made the smallest amount in parking fines at just £25 were; Springdale Road, Park Lake Road, Forest Road, Rodney Court Car Park, Ham Common, Coastguard Way, Littledown Centre Car Park, Pound Lane Car Park and Howeth Road.

'Irresponsible parking can have a huge impact'

Despite receiving nearly £2million in payments, BCP Council said the money made from the fines goes back into delivering the service across the region.

A BCP Council spokesperson said: “We know that irresponsible parking can have a huge impact on our communities, residents and businesses.

“To keep our roads safe, maintain access to properties, support businesses and keep traffic flowing, our parking enforcement team carry out patrols on our streets as often as possible.

"They will issue Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) to vehicles that are parking illegally and in some instances tow vehicles away.

“The income from Penalty Charge Notices is required to fund this important service.’’
