Mayor of Bournemouth, Cllr Robert Lawton led the packed East Cliff in a countdown from 10 to zero and instructed 'light' as a member of staff attempted to light the gas burner.

As the council team scrambled to rectify the issue, fireworks started going off on the seafront.
Another person could be heard saying: "Someone turn the gas on".
