PATROLS to combat “reckless” jet skiing along the Dorset coast have taken place after reports of water users “fearing for their safety”.

Officers from the Marine Engagement Team covered areas across the coast following several reports by residents and visitors regarding anti-social behaviour (ASB) and misuse of Personal Watercrafts (PW) in the water.

On Wednesday, July 13, patrols were conducted along with a BCP seafront officer covering the Wick, Christchurch Quay, Mudeford Quay and Avon beach in an effort to deter and disrupt ASB on the water. There is a four-knot speed limit in the harbour.

The following day, officers met with staff and rangers at the Lulworth estate in order to discuss similar issues in Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. There is a speed limit of five knots in the cove.

On Friday, July 15, patrols were conducted in Wareham where officers engaged with local businesses “who have witnessed the reckless way in which jet skis have been speeding along the river, leaving water users fearing for their safety”. There is a four knot speed limit along the River Frome in Wareham.

A Purbeck Police spokesperson said: “To those using jet skis and power boats in the aforementioned areas please be mindful. We want you to enjoy your activities, but please do so responsibly and be respectful of other water users and wildlife in the area.

“Have fun and don't risk your life or that of others.”
