A TEAM of Christchurch vets will be fundraising for Cancer Research UK in support of a colleague fighting illness.

Vets, nurses, and admin staff at Priory Vet Group are preparing to take on the Avon Valley Walk on Saturday, a 34-mile trek from Salisbury to Christchurch.

The challenge is in aid of Cancer Research UK and was set in support of a “very brave friend and colleague” of the group, Elaine.

Elaine is known as ‘Sparkles’ to Priory Vet Group, and that is why they are planning to ‘Stomp for Sparkles’.

One vet preparing for the walk is Nicola. She said: “Elaine is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

“She is actually having surgery on Friday and has already been through chemotherapy, so we wanted to do something to show our support for her, but also to help Cancer Research and help people like her in the future. We thought it would be a good thing to do.

“We’re excited for it now. We’re starting to think we probably could’ve done a bit more training, but it’s supposed to be a challenge and it certainly will be.

“Whatever we’re doing is not as hard as it is for the people undergoing cancer treatment. So, we’ll do our best.”

The team of 12 are hoping to complete the trek in just one day. Nicola said: “We reckon it’s going to take us about 15 hours of nonstop walking.

“We’re setting off at six in the morning from Salisbury, and we won’t be back in Christchurch till probably nine at night.”
