I THINK most would agree that prohibiting cycling and also the use of electric scooters between Bournemouth Pier and Sandbanks between the hours of 10am and 6pm during July and August, is not only sensible but absolutely essential to avoid someone getting seriously injured or worse.

So it is to their credit that the council choose to maintain this ban.

However, having a rule and enforcing it seems to be beyond their remit.

During a walk along the prom from Bournemouth towards Sandbanks during the recent hot spell, I found myself dodging a group of cyclists that were travelling at speed.

I recovered from this fright but my relief was short lived, as I was then buzzed by two electric scooters coming from the opposite direction weaving in and out of pedestrians.

A friend of mine rents one of the beach huts and tries to enjoy time there with his grandchildren, but he dare not let them cross the prom without supervision.

He is on edge all the time he’s there and it spoils what should be a pleasant day.

I feel sorry for local residents who rent beach huts, I would be furious especially given the annual charge.

I realise beach rangers can only advise offenders as to the rules, and my friend has witnessed the predicted abusive replies, and so the council needs to involve the local police rather than turning a blind eye before someone is seriously hurt.
