MORE than 300 drivers have reportedly ignored ‘no parking’ signs placed along a road in Studland while firefighters continue to deal with the aftermath of a huge fire.

Police have been called to the scene and drivers have been urged to return to their vehicles with motorists reportedly moving a water hose being used by firefighters. 

Firefighters have been at Studland heath since Friday lunchtime after the fire which is believed to have been caused by a barbecue or campfire.

At the height of the incident, around 90 firefighters were dealing with the blaze which was eventually under control at around 8.30pm on Friday.

However, despite being scaled back, fire crews remain on the site today to dampen down the area.

Although the Sandbanks Ferry has resumed service and Ferry Road has reopened today, visitors to Studland were told they could only park in car parks and not along Ferry Road as firefighters needed it for access.

A Dorset Police spokesperson said: “We have been called to reports that more than 300 cars have ignored the council’s no parking signs that have been placed along Ferry Road in Studland to allow the fire service to tackle the large heath fire there.

“The parking restrictions are in place because the water hose is running along the road to allow firefighters to deal with this incident. We have even received reports that motorists have been moving the hose so they can park up.

“We would urge anyone who has done this to please return to their vehicles and move them.

“Please do not park here: our fire colleagues are working in extreme conditions to tackle this blaze and they need the public to help them, not hinder them.”
