A FLIGHT from Tenerife to Bournemouth had to perform a sudden stop after “swerving to the right and the left” as it was about to take-off.
The abrupt halt was described as “very frightening” by one passenger, with the aircraft stuck on the runway after its brakes reportedly seized on following the incident.
Those on board the Ryanair plane at Tenerife South Airport had to wait for around an hour before being transported back to the airport terminal.
The flight was due to land at Bournemouth Airport shortly before 4pm but passengers are now facing a length delay on the Spanish island.
Natasha Rickman, who was due to fly back from holiday with her sister, told the Daily Echo: “We were about to take off, going full throttle and then the plane swerved to the right and then to the left quite substantially. Then they put the brakes on really hard.”
Sherborne resident Natasha, who works for the Citizens Advice Bureau, said fire crews had been unsuccessful in trying to cool the brakes so they could be released and the aircraft could be towed off the runway.
“Everyone just didn’t know what was going on,” she said. “We all thought we weren’t going to stop.
“It was really frightening as it was all happening. I don’t think they know why the plane swerved.
“There were quite a lot of children on the plane who were scared as well. It was very frightening. Luckily we weren’t in the air.”
Natasha said no flights have been able to take off from the airport since the incident as the Ryanair plane remained on the runway.
