A WOMAN has completed a mammoth 40 mile walk just a year after being immobilised with sepsis.
Tatyana Scarratt, 18, from New Milton, was hospitalised part way through her A-levels and spent days in intensive care at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.
A year later, after securing an A* and two As despite missing a significant amount of time at sixth form, she’s raised more than £1,000 for the UK Sepsis Trust.
She said: “I think it was April and I had mild symptoms which got worse as the day went on.
“The turning point was one morning I said to my mum I felt so ill, I felt like I was dying.
“My mum called the ambulance, I couldn’t walk down the stairs. The first thing they thought was meningitis.
“I went to the emergency department, the first diagnosis was Scarlet Fever which was crazy.”
Tatyana said things got worse and she had to be taken to ICU where she was given adrenaline.
She was then diagnosed with sepsis and had to spend the next few months learning how to walk again.
Speaking of her walk, she said: “I think overall it was a bit of closure. It was six months on in my recovery and I was learning about biology, learning about diseases.
“It made me thing I needed to do something just to get closure on the whole thing.
“We started at Weymouth, I did it with boyfriend Ollie, and walked to Durdle Door, walking for about six hours.
“We got to Durdle Door and camped. The second day started and we walked all the way to Swanage, that was a massive day, eight hours walking with killer hills, I’m definitely feeling it today.”
Along the way Tatyana met a number of people who had also been affected by sepsis which inspired her on the walk.
She continued: “It’s just incredible, I never would have thought at 17 I would be immobilised and lose all the muscle I built up in the gym.
“It’s amazing to see how I can change in just a year.
“I want to say a massive thank you to all the staff at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.
“They were courageous, generous, kind, they were so selfless working through the night, never complaining and always willing to help.
“It was a very courageous job from all of them.”
Tatyana is now off to Chichester Uni to study psychology. To donate to her challenge, visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tatyana-scarratt.
