THE skies over Bournemouth lit up with fireworks and cheesy Eighties music tonight as the Air Festival’s Night Air display took place.
Thousands gathered along the beach and clifftops this evening as four separate displays wowed people from Bournemouth and beyond.
First up was a Spitfire, filling the skies with its iconic noise of the 2,000hp Rolls-Royce Griffon engine that won the Battle of Britain. The East Cliff goats were not fazed.

Firebirds lighting up the skies this evening to Take My Breath Away. A moment worthy of Top Gun? They’re certainly colourful… @Bournemouthecho pic.twitter.com/F9nW8fejML

Next up was the Firebirds, which lit up the skies with some impressive colour and sparks.
The Firebirds, performing in two RV4 X2s, performed various eye-catching stunts to the backdrop of an ear-catching Take My Breath Away – a Top Gun song.
Music over, the audience were requested to switch on their iPhone cameras so the pilots can take a photograph from their planes.
A lot of “wows” for Otto the Helicopter. Very impressive fireworks display coming from this Schweizer 300 helicopter 🚁. Better than seeing a police helicopter, that’s for sure… @Bournemouthecho pic.twitter.com/i1fsB6TRPf

After that, the show took an even brighter turn as Otto the Helicopter showed off its fireworks display.
Plenty of “wows” were heard from the crowds as pilot Brendan O’Brien let off a dazzling display of fireworks.

Concluding the first Night Air show of 2022 was the Tigers FFT Parachute Display Team, as a team of six parachutists landed on Bournemouth beach from approximately 4,000ft in the sky.
