Bach's St. John Passion is an inspirational work, which the Bournemouth Bach Choir, orchestra and soloists under Tim Hooper's direction responded with glorious voice.
Conveying the Easter story in a simpler, less theatrical manner than the composer's St. Matthew Passion Hugh Hetherington's wide-ranging tenor made the central Evangelist's role something of a speciality.
His carefully crafted diction ensured the purpose of an English version of which he has also provided another translation, making various alterations that arguably give easier understanding without spoiling the original prose.
James Arthur's Jesus had a masterful strength of character, a good rich tone and equalled in commanding depth and compassionate attitude by Jonathan Prentice as the voice of Pilate. The female arias, whilst fewer, were superbly sung by soprano Elizabeth Poole and alto Sue Marrs soulfully accompanied on cello in All is fulfilled by Muriel Daniels.
Choruses provide much of the drama as in the inspired divided chorus as the soldiers decide to cast lots for Jesus' coat whilst chorales of ensnaring beauty punctuate the entire work. The choir was handsomely schooled for this moving and extensive masterpiece, Hooper's abundant experience bringing both rhythmic vitality and carefully shaped tenderness to every part.
