WHILE some women of a similar age are donning their wool socks and slippers, Jean Cox and Sylvia Harvell are slipping into their sequin dresses and dancing shoes.

For the pair who are both in their mid-70s, are keen belly dancers and attend their local dance class in Parkstone every week.

"A lot of people tend to just sit back in their armchairs and take up knitting or something when they get to our age," says Sylvia.

"But I believe it's never too late to try something new. I used to go ballroom dancing with my husband but I had to give that up when he developed Parkinson's Disease.

"The good thing about belly dancing is that you don't need a partner. It is also a great way to keep fit and keep the weight off - it tones up your stomach too."

The two women met through their local Slimming World club at Canford Cliffs in Poole where they have lost more than six stone in weight between them.

And even though Jean has an artificial hip and Sylvia suffers with arthritis in her knees, they can still shimmy and shake with the best of them.

"Everyone dances to their own ability," says Jean.

"It doesn't matter whether you're eighteen or 80. I started belly dancing about four years ago - my family thought I was mad - what's granny up to this time they asked?!"

Jean is also interested in the history of belly dancing. She explains that it was originally started by groups of women together in flat shoes or bare feet to strengthen the pelvic muscles for childbirth.

"Titillation in high heels was not it's purpose," she adds. "It's good exercise that suits any age or size and is especially good for all joints and muscles with lots of arm, shoulder and hip movements too."

Both ladies are dressed up for the interview sporting colourful sequin skirts and sparkly tops with coin belts and finger cymbals.

"You don't have to get dressed up though," adds Jean. "You can just wear trousers and t-shirts if you like but it's nice to excuse to wear pretty clothes - it puts you in the right mood!"
